Writing Your Executive Resume

Writing Your Executive ResumeWriting an executive resume has become an extremely complex art. Executive resumes generally are far more detailed than regular resumes. To compete for the high paying, high-powered positions, you need to create a resume that doesnt just inform, but excites, entices and extends the invitation to learn more about your skills, competencies and all the right reasons why you should be the next CEO, CFO or President.Begin by remembering that very few of the executives in charge of hiring will actually read your resume in full. These days, with the high level of competition and well qualified applicants, even executive resumes need a special polish to attract those hiring. The idea is that this will lead you to the interview, where your other skills will then be examined. To get that interview, your resume needs to be sharp, direct, and catch the eyes of those in charge early. You want to come across as a well-rounded, exceptionally professional and highly skill ed applicant who is the best choice for the job. Dont be afraid to outline all the skills and experiences that make you so desirable. Still, keep the summary brief, concise and up front, but allow for more details of some of the more important skills and experiences that will prove you are the best.Perhaps one of the most important aspects of your executive resume is establishing your value. Since the corporation or company will be paying you top dollar, you need to prove that you are of the greatest worth and unique attributes that are rare and can only be found in you (sell yourself). Your specific talents for solving complex problems can be outlined, but describing the challenges you faced and the actions you took to solve the problems as well as the results of those actions will convey your worth in clear and undeniable ways.Your focus needs to very targeted and clear. As an executive-a leader- you need to show the reader what youve done and what you can do for them. I have my c lients get very detailed and accomplishment-focused. It may take some time to gather all the facts of what youve done, but it is homework worth doing. Nothing says, Im hesitant about my skills like a vague, unfocused resume. These kinds of details will show them you didnt just step off the truck, but that in fact you have been building your skills all along. Examine all your experiences carefully and pick the ones that best show the timeline of how you learned what you learned that will make you the best choice for this job.Be very thoughtful about what personal information you include. While board memberships and professional associations might be relevant, certain religious or free time activities might bedrngnis be pertinent (i.e. less is more). Some personal information can be used as an ice breaker (rock climbing as a hobby?), but be aware that some personal information may work against you and be used to screen you out of the running.Guest Post by Erin Kennedy, CPRW, CERW, BS/ HR, is a Certified Professional Executive Resume Writer/Career Consultant and President of Professional Resume Services, Inc. Modeling Our Work Policies After This Countrys Would Add 5 M People to the Workforce

Modeling Our Work Policies After This Countrys Would Add 5 M People to the Workforce A subsidized child care, which has made it even easier for mothers to remain in the workforce. By providing these protections, mora parents living in Canada are able to raise families and continue working. The United States is one of very few industrialized countries that does not have a nationalstaatal parental leave policy in place. To help address this lack, some individual companies and states have adopted paid parental leave policies of their own. Unfortunately, because parental leave is still viewed as being mora of a privilege than a right, some managers form negative views of women who take leave even at companies that have extended maternity leave benefits in place. According to a recent study from the Journal of Applied Psychology, women who make use of extended maternity leave are seen as being less serious about their jobs by their managers. This unfortunate perception leads to women being passed over for career advancement opportunities. Instituting a national policy for maternity leave would make the practice of using leave more acceptable because it would become more normalized.Another way to ensure that more people enter and remain in the workforce would be to provide fathers with extended, paid leave as well. This practice would both give fathers time to bond with their children and ease the burden of caring for a new child alone which is often placed on women who still frequently become primary caretakers.Canadas keep in touch policy has aided new parents on leave by providing them with updates about happenings occurring within the company. By reaching out to those taking time off, companies show their support and make it easier for new parents to transition back into work life. Because employees are not made to feel out of the loop, they feel like they never left the office. To further help employees integrate their role as parents with their roles as employee s, some companies have begun to launch return-to-work programs that let employees work 60 percent of their regular hours at their full wage amount. The authors of the studies estimate that should the United States choose to adopt these parent-friendly policies, as many as 5 million workers would join the workforce, insinuating that when the country provides benefits to its citizens, the nation as a whole benefits.--Kayla Heisler is an essayist and Pushcart Prize-nominated poet. 7 Helpful Hacks for Business Travelers

7 Helpful Hacks for Business Travelers 7 Helpful Hacks for Business Travelers To those who dont do it often, business travel can seem quite glamorous. Who wouldnt want to get paid to visit exotic locations and stay in fancy hotels? For regular business travelers, however, the reality is less exciting.Flying can be an unpredictable experience, and things dont always goas planned. Flightsget cancelled, and luggage gets lost in transit. While these things are impossible to prevent, you can make sure your business travels go as smoothly as possible with these seven tips1. Book in AdvanceWhenever possible, you should book early to bring ticket costs down. According to Skyscanner, the spitzenleistung time to book flights is seven weeks in advance. You could also save up to 30 percent if you book your flights on a Sunday.Booking in advance isnt just for flights, either. You can get the best deals on most things like like rental cars and hotels when you dont wait until the last minute.2. Fly EarlyOne of the biggest nuisances of business travel is the time spent waiting at various points throughout the journey. A great way to minimize your wait time is to fly early in the morning, particularly between 6 and 7 a.m. There are fewer delays during this time period, for a number of reasons, including that thunderstorms are less likely to develop in the morning.3. Travel LightMany airlines offer cheap flights to a whole host of destinations, but these airlines are actually making more money than ever by way of incremental costs. The most common extra fees that you encounter will be for luggage check-ins, so traveling light is a surefire way to minimize expenditure. Whats more, you will also be able to swiftly leave the airport, rather than having to wait at the baggage claim.4. Take Advantage of Corporate DealsIf you are a frequent flyer, take advantage of the corporate deals that some airlines offer. By choosing one particular airline to fly with each time, you can earn c ertain privileges and rewards for your loyalty. For example, you can earn air miles each time you travel, which will end up saving you money on future flights. Some airlines, like Southwest, even allow you to cancel your flight up to ten minutes before departure5.Buy a Portable ChargerHaving your devices fully charged is important for anyone traveling, and even more so for those traveling for business. You may need to send emails or work on documents while youre on the go, so its vital you carry a charger in your hand luggage. A portable charger is an essential purchase for any business traveler.6. Use AirbnbAirbnb can find you a whole host of stunning apartments and properties to stay in, often at far lower rates than hotels. This is especially true if youre traveling as a group, as you pay for the property and not per person. Another perk of Airbnb is that you get to sample a bit of the citys charm and live like a local.7. Stay an Extra DayWhat better way toend a successful busine ss trip than to spend an extra day in the city exploring the sights and experiencing the culture? Booking an extra dayalso gives you the opportunity to bond with your colleagues. You could also use this time to build on some of the connections youve made on the trip, perhaps bybooking a follow-up meeting or two.

The Inner Workings of an Advertising Agency

The Inner Workings of an Advertising AgencyThe Inner Workings of an Advertising AgencyThe inner workings of an advertising agency can be a mystery to anyone outside the industry. The way these agencies are represented in movies and on television is often a world apart from the actual day-to-day operations of a legitimate firm. This is a driven- and sometimes cutthroat- industry with many interlocking parts and personnel. Most agencies are comprised of four major departments business, research, creative, and media. Each must excel if an agency is going to be successful. How Does an Advertising Agency Work? An agency usually gets work when it receives a pitch from a potential client- an audition, with the client providing a brief to a number of advertising agencies and choosing the one that best resolves the problem, perhaps something along the lines of a competing brand. It doesnt always happen this way, but its common. Contracts are then signed, and the real work begins. The scop e of works (SOW) can vary greatly depending on the type of agency and the client, but the agency generally agrees to produce a certain amount of work for a set amount of money. That might be a retainer, an hourly fee, or another arrangement. The client agrees to pay the agency upon receipt of the work. The ad agencys role is to solve problems for its client. The types of problems and solutions can vary depending on the nature of clients business and the ad agencys areas of expertise. The Process of Creating Advertising Campaigns The majority of advertising, marketing, design, and PR firms work along the same basic concept of steps. Some steps might be skipped or combined, but the basic structure is often the same. The account manager and team meet with the client to identify the problem that needs to be resolved. The account manager writes a creative brief based on that problem. It will include competitive analysis, research, the assistance of the planner and/or creative director , and, eventually, a sign-off from the client. The account manager briefs the creative team and establishes a timeline, budget, and proposed media. The creative team works on the project for several days or weeks, and brings the first round of ideas to the creative director. The creative director will cull the ideas that arent working and direct the team to explore the better ideas. The creative team will continue to work on the ideas, bringing in assistance from the production department if necessary. The account manager and other members of the agency might be enlisted as well to make sure the work is on track. The production department will begin estimates if there are printed pieces involved, or if a shoot is required. The creative director approves the final ideas and the creative team presents them to the client. The client will typically take some time to discuss the ideas before giving feedback to the agency. Feedback might result in a reworking of ideas, or a green light to mov e into the execution of workable ideas. A budget and timeline will once again be approved at this point. The creative team works closely with the account team, the media-buying team, production, and the creative director to produce the ads in whatever form has been agreed to.The final ads are placed in front of the client for approval. The ads are published if the client approves, whether its online, in print, outdoor, on the air, or in any other media. The agency will monitor the success and the return on investment of the ads and give feedback to the client. The client pays the agency and the whole process is repeated. Self-Promotion and Awards Are Key Firms reserve the right to cut ties with an ad agency at any time and to move on to another agency that might serve their needs better. Its a competitive business, and acknowledgement and success are crucial to survival. Agencies must get out there to win more business, and to have clients coming to them for more work. They often enter their best work in awards shows. Only the best shows will garner attention from clients who are worth having. Theyll also develop websites and other forms of self-promotion to get clients looking in their direction.
